The Aatu Tamaskan is a new, rare breed that is not yet recognized by the FCI (Fédération Cynologique Internationale) or the AKC (American Kennel Club). However, it is our hope that one day the Aatu Tamaskan will achieve AKC recognition status. In the meantime, we can take advantage of the many services the AKC has to offer.

The AKC encourages the promotion of responsible breeding practices and responsible dog ownership. In fact, responsible breeding is an AKC hallmark. Additionally, the AKC has been at the forefront of breeder education through the sponsorship of and participation in seminars, and the distribution of education material. Through the AKC Canine Health Foundation, AKC has channeled millions of dollars into canine health research devoted to improving the health of dogs and to identifying genes linked to specific health problems.

In an ongoing effort to provide educational experiences for breeders, the AKC, together with the AKC Canine Health Foundation, launched the Breeders Symposia in 1994. This program is targeted to new and experienced breeders and is an ideal venue in which to learn about sound breeding practices and advances in genetic health tests that lead to our dogs living longer and stronger lives. Presentations generally include basic and applied genetics, anatomy and physiology, breeding techniques, and updates on The American Kennel Club and the AKC Canine Health Foundation. Held at veterinary colleges and other locations across the nation, every attempt is made to make this program available to breeders everywhere.

The Genome Barks podcast series features lectures from these highly successful AKC-CHF Breeders Symposia, and provides responsible breeders and pet owners an inside look at the work being done by the AKC and the AKC Canine Health Foundation. New podcasts are released every two weeks. They can be accessed through the link provided here.

The TBA strongly encourages continuing breeder education. Whether you are a new or old breeder, or a puppy owner interested in a particular topic, we encourage you to take advantage of this tremendous resource.
